Gum disease is a condition that exists in various stages. It is fairly common; it is estimated that as many as half of adult Americans have some stage of the disease. But what is gum disease?
Gum disease begins with an initial stage of gum inflammation, known as gingivitis. This form of gum disease may be very mild, and a person may not even be aware that they have it. This is the best stage for treatment in order to achieve the best outcomes. Gingivitis may be recognized in a couple of different ways. A patient may notice the initial warning signs themselves. These include red or swollen gums, an indication of inflammation; and gums that bleed when brushing or flossing. Sometimes, gingivitis is the result of inadequate oral care, which has allowed plaque to buildup on teeth along the gum line. Plaque hardens to tartar, and both are products of harmful bacteria that invade and irritate the gums. A patient is encouraged to contact the dental office right away regarding any of the signs mentioned, so that the condition can be treated as soon as possible.
The other way in which gingivitis may be recognized is during a routine dental visit. This is one of a number of important reasons why we encourage consistent dental visits. Professional cleanings by a trained hygienist allows tartar to be removed where it may have accumulated. Regular visits will make this process easier and more effective in helping to maintain oral health. While plaque can be removed with personal brushing and flossing, tartar requires professional removal.
If gingivitis is not treated and reversed, it will lead to periodontal disease. It is very important that treatment be administered to prevent further complications. Advanced stages of gum disease can lead to pain, increased bleeding and swelling of gums, oozing of gums, loosening teeth, and even contribute to the risk factors for development of other health conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart problems.
