TMJ disorder is a common problem experienced by many people. The symptoms associated with this condition are so varied that a proper diagnosis can be difficult to reach. Part of our commitment to the highest standard of care is to provide information about TMJ disorder that will help people recognize the potential symptoms.
TMJ disorder occurs when the joints that aid in chewing and speaking fail to work properly. This could be due to a misaligned bite, trauma, or excessive wear, and will likely lead to symptoms that one may not immediately consider associated with the jaw. Because of the location of the temporomandibular joints, various muscles and ligaments become stressed and fatigued, including those that wrap around the head and spread down the neck and shoulders. TMJ disorder can cause the telltale clicking or limited movement of the jaw and severe, chronic headaches and problems in the ear.
In downtown LA, there are several approaches to the treatment of TMJ. For years, one approach was TMJ joint replacement, a form of treatment not typically associated with facial disorders. It has been thought that TMJ joint replacement can correct issues in the jawbone, and alleviate the pain and other symptoms of dysfunctional joints. This is usually accomplished by using titanium joint devices that replace existing joints, and are inserted in a surgical procedure. This TMJ prosthesis reconstructs the jawbone structure, and it is thought to create smoother function. Many agree that this should be used as a last resort, if at all, for the correction of TMJ disorder.
Follow up with patients who have undergone this extreme surgical treatment show that not all find relief of their symptoms. A high percentage of TMJ joint replacement patients continue to experience discomfort after the implant process.
