Most dental patients only think about their dentist on the day of a scheduled appointment. However, if you wake up with tooth pain or break a tooth, you may wish you had thought to put your dentist on speed dial. Dr. Don Mungcal of Downtown Dental in Los Angeles knows that when you have an urgent need for a dentist, you still want one you know and trust.
Common causes for urgent dental care
- Throbbing pain – If you’ve ever had an intense toothache, you know that you want a solution to fix it quickly. In some cases, over-the-counter pain medication can take the edge off, but it’s important to remember that there’s an underlying problem that caused that pain. Even if the discomfort subsides, it’s important to schedule an appointment to have the tooth evaluated. Then the dentist can determine what caused the pain and how it should be treated.
- Cracked or damaged tooth – This is common when someone bites into something hard, like ice or a sourdough pretzel. It can also be caused by a fall or being hit in the face. In some cases, patients will experience immediate pain, in other cases, the patient will notice extreme sensitivity to hot or cold foods and beverages. If the tooth has a sharp or jagged edge, keep it covered with wax or gum to prevent cutting the inside of your mouth.
- Lost tooth – A tooth that’s been completely knocked out needs immediate treatment for the best results. If you can locate the tooth, you can rinse it and place it back in the tooth’s pocket or keep it in a little bit of milk or water. Your dentist will first attempt to save the tooth. However, if you can’t save the tooth, there are restoration options.
Don’t put it off, get help fast
When it comes to dental emergencies time is of the essence. Not only to reduce your pain but also to provide you with the best possible outcome. A toothache could be the indication of a cavity that’s getting close to the nerve. Putting off treatment might lead to more intensive treatment down the road. Similarly, a cracked tooth that doesn’t hurt might seem like it’s no cause for alarm. But the tooth may continue to weaken over time leading to further damage.
If you’re experiencing tooth pain or an oral health problem, call the office and let us know what’s going on. We’ll schedule an appointment and provide you with guidance on how to care for the tooth until we can evaluate it and provide a plan for treatment.
