Most adults have been brushing their teeth for so long that it’s almost second nature. While adults may have a general idea of the right way to brush, it’s a habit that’s often rushed and not properly performed. Dr. Don Mungcal of Downtown Dental in Los Angeles, CA, has helped his dentistry patients keep their teeth and gums healthy for many years. During your twice yearly dental exam, Dr. Mungcal and his team are looking for signs that your at home dental cleaning habits are effective. Here he provides several tips to help ensure the health of your mouth:
- Give yourself time. If you’re brushing your teeth in less time than it takes to sing the ABC’s, you’re doing it too fast. In fact, proper brushing should last for at least two minutes. Without taking the proper amount of time, you’re almost guaranteed to miss critical areas such as the molars or the gum line.
- Think about sections. To make sure you hit all the proper spots, think about your mouth in sections – the outer surfaces of both the upper and lower teeth; the inner surfaces of upper and lower teeth; the chewing surfaces; and the tongue.
- Angle and technique are important too. Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle and use short, gentle strokes. Near the gum line, sweep or roll the brush away from the gums, while on chewing surfaces back and forth or circular strokes are more effective. It is important to brush firmly, but gently, as aggressive brushing can damage the enamel and gums.
- Use the right toothbrush and toothpaste. For most patients, a soft-bristled brush is most effective in removing food particles while being gentle on the gums. Patients who have limited dexterity may benefit from an electric brush. There are many toothpastes available and some are designed for specific conditions or needs such as sensitive teeth, cavity prevention, or stained teeth. Choose the one that’s best for you in a flavor you enjoy, or ask your dentist for a recommendation if you have questions.
