A dental implant is an artificial tooth root, which is placed in the jawbone to support replacement teeth. An individual tooth can be replaced by a cosmetic porcelain crown atop one implant. The procedure essentially involves three steps.
- First, the implants are inserted in the jawbone, in a gentle surgery. The patient is provided with temporary restorations to wear while the bone heals.
- Step two is simply waiting, usually three to six months. Any lingering soreness should fade within a few days, but osseointegration takes time. During this comfortable process, the bone creates new cells, building up around (and attaching to) the implant.
- Step three completes the process. In just a couple of appointments, you will have your brand new smile! A connector called an abutment is attached to the implant, and then the final restoration is put in place.
The process is simple, and the success rate is high – well over 90 percent. However, the procedure for placing a dental implant is sophisticated and technique sensitive. It may be difficult for an inexperienced dentist to achieve reliable, truly esthetic results. Some dentists refer patients to other practices for some phases of the procedure.
