Gum disease prevention in Los Angeles

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a serious condition that can occur for a number of reasons, including when dental patients in Los Angeles do not practice good oral health habits at home. Although many individuals maintain their twice-a-year standing dental visits, they may skip brushing and flossing at home occasionally, increasing the risk of developing gum disease.

Although dental checkups are important for several reasons such as receiving a professional cleaning, and giving your dentist an opportunity to examine your teeth and gums, at-home care is also essential. To understand why at home care is so important, it is necessary to understand how gum disease occurs.

Tooth decay and gum disease develop when food particles, sugar, and bacteria on the teeth are not brushed away, so they develop into plaque and tartar. The acid in the bacteria begins to work into the enamel, which causes cavities. Infection of the gums can begin as well. Early signs of gum disease are tender or swollen gums, or gums that bleed when you brush your teeth.

Fortunately, the early stages of gum disease, known as gingivitis, are reversible if detected and treated early. Typically, better at-home care, professional cleaning, and specific medicines and antibiotics recommended by Dr. Mungcal, will be enough to treat gingivitis.

If gingivitis goes undetected, it can progress to the advanced stages of periodontal disease. As the condition advances, it becomes more serious. Common symptoms of advanced stages of gum disease are shrinking gums, loss of bone, and even losing a tooth, or teeth. Before teeth can be replaced, or other restorative actions can be taken, the gum disease condition must first be managed. Advanced stages of gum disease can be treated with deep cleaning and medications.

Dr. Mungcal uses specific medicines and antibiotics that kill bacteria in conjunction with proper periodontal cleaning. This makes his non-surgical periodontal therapy more effective, and helps avoid surgery along with keeping the mouth healthy. Your gums shouldn’t hurt or bleed when you brush your teeth. If they do, or if you have any other indication that you may have gum disease, call the team at Downtown Dental and schedule an appointment.

Success Stories

I actually owe a debt to Downtown Dental because they caught my oral cancer. I went to them because I had a bump on my tongue and thankfully they ordered a biopsy immediately (same day). The staff has been wonderful to me (even sending me a get well card during my cancer treatment). They do great work - the crowns are made in the office to save you time - and they are very upfront on pricing. You know exactly what you will pay. They are also very flexible on appointments. And they validate parking! They also have taken COVID precautions very seriously. Very professional and well-organized. Highly recommend them.
The staff here on its own deserves the five stars. Everyone is so friendly and take there time to get to know you as a patient. There very easy to work with on what’s best for you in the long run with insurance and dental care. On top of them making you feel comfortable, you can tell that they actually care about you and your dental health. The parking is also super easy and they validate so you don’t have to pay. I’d highly recommend coming here!

Here at downtown Dental, we take oral health and cancer screenings very serious. This month is November and it's the month of oral health cancer awareness and screenings. Every patient we examined thoroughly, we look and we check their lips, tongue and we check for any abnormalities or bumps. At home you should also check to make sure that everything looks okayLeava is going to demonstrate what in oral health cancer screening is and what we examine. So, we first start off by checking all the lips. We make sure that the lips look healthy and that we palpate them, which is touching them and making sure that there's nothing anormal. Then we go into the mucosa and check the cheeks. We're going to look and check the hard palate as well as the soft palate. This might tickle a little. We checked the posterior of the tongue. Do you, Viola, go ahead and say, aaaaaa. We check the lateral sides of the tongue. Go ahead and sit your tongue showed up great. And we also check the floor of the mouth. Get the tongue to the roof of your mouth. Good all clear. Oral cancer is especially important to check the patients who are smokers, alcohol drinkers and we thank you for watching the video.
