Trusted Los Angeles, CA, dental practice offers oral surgery recovery tips

Dental Practice in Los Angeles CA Area

When patients learn they need an oral surgery procedure, they often focus most of their research and concern on preparing for the appointment. However, whether the procedure is an extraction, a dental implant, or another treatment, it’s important to plan for your recovery as well. Dr. Don Mungcal of Downtown Dental in Los Angeles, CA, helps patients understand what to expect following your dental surgery.

  • Bleeding– If you had a tooth extraction, you should expect some slight bleeding for the first day. You can use the gauze provided by your dental practice and bite down firmly to stop the bleeding.
  • Swelling– It is common to notice some inflammation around the surgical area. To minimize the swelling, keep your head elevated and use an icepack on the outside of your cheek. The swelling should be gone within a week of the surgery. You may also notice stiffness, discomfort, and bruising for approximately a week.
  • Medications– Prescription and over-the-counter medications should be ordered or picked up immediately following the procedure. These medications will ensure that you don’t get an infection and keep your pain and discomfort to a minimum. Follow the instructions from your dentist, but in many cases, you will want to keep up with the pain medication as directed, even before the pain becomes severe.
  • Rest– Keep in mind that your mouth, and body, have just been through a surgical procedure. You should plan for a couple of restful days following surgery to allow your mouth to heal. You should be able to resume normal daily activities in two to three days, but consult your dentist before taking on any intense physical activities.
  • Oral hygiene– Take care when brushing and flossing in the first days after surgery. You should also avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting for at least 24 hours, as this can disrupt the sutures in the mouth. After the first day, you can rinse gently with a salt water solution.

Success Stories

I actually owe a debt to Downtown Dental because they caught my oral cancer. I went to them because I had a bump on my tongue and thankfully they ordered a biopsy immediately (same day). The staff has been wonderful to me (even sending me a get well card during my cancer treatment). They do great work - the crowns are made in the office to save you time - and they are very upfront on pricing. You know exactly what you will pay. They are also very flexible on appointments. And they validate parking! They also have taken COVID precautions very seriously. Very professional and well-organized. Highly recommend them.
The staff here on its own deserves the five stars. Everyone is so friendly and take there time to get to know you as a patient. There very easy to work with on what’s best for you in the long run with insurance and dental care. On top of them making you feel comfortable, you can tell that they actually care about you and your dental health. The parking is also super easy and they validate so you don’t have to pay. I’d highly recommend coming here!
I am so glad I came to Downtown Dental. From the moment I walked into the office I was met with a smile and a warm welcome. During my first visit, a dental plan was made for me and they got to work right away. I have never experienced such attention to detail and such excellent customer service at a dental office. During my root canal procedure and fillings everyone was extremely helpful and constantly making sure I was comfortable. Since then, I am encouraging everyone to check out Downtown Dental, they really are amazing.

Oral Cancer Screening Video

Oral Cancer Screening Video
Every patient at Downtown Dental undergoes a thorough check for oral cancer and other dental health issues. This video shows how it’s done. Transcript
Here at downtown Dental, we take oral health and cancer screenings very serious. This month is November and it's the month of oral health cancer awareness and screenings. Every patient we examined thoroughly, we look and we check their lips, tongue and we check for any abnormalities or bumps. At home you should also check to make sure that everything looks okayLeava is going to demonstrate what in oral health cancer screening is and what we examine. So, we first start off by checking all the lips. We make sure that the lips look healthy and that we palpate them, which is touching them and making sure that there's nothing anormal. Then we go into the mucosa and check the cheeks. We're going to look and check the hard palate as well as the soft palate. This might tickle a little. We checked the posterior of the tongue. Do you, Viola, go ahead and say, aaaaaa. We check the lateral sides of the tongue. Go ahead and sit your tongue showed up great. And we also check the floor of the mouth. Get the tongue to the roof of your mouth. Good all clear. Oral cancer is especially important to check the patients who are smokers, alcohol drinkers and we thank you for watching the video.
